Two Hospitalized After 5-Truck Crash on I-81 Near Buchanan, VA
By Shapiro, Lewis & Appleton, Tractor-Trailer Accident Victims’ Attorneys
After a pickup truck and four tractor-trailers piled up in a chain-reaction accident on I-81 just before the Arcadia exit from I-81 in Botetourt County, Virginia (VA), on the evening of Nov. 12, 2012, two drivers went to hospitals with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
Virginia State Police told reporters that the scene for the crash was set when the driver of the pickup hydroplaned and came to a stop blocking the right lane of the interstate. Then, according to WSLS-TV 10, “a tractor-trailer hit the pickup truck, then two other tractor-trailers hit the first tractor-trailer. Then a UPS tractor-trailer tried to avoid the crash, ran off the right side of the road, hit a guardrail, and flipped.”
Police said they expected to file charges against one or more of the drivers involved in the accident, but they did not indicate who they believed to be at fault.

The Virginia Personal Injury Lawyers’ Perspective
The crash occurred after sundown on a day that saw heavy rain and intermittent snow in southwest Virginia. Bad weather and poor road conditions undoubtedly contributed to making the pickup driver lose control, but those circumstances would not necessarily excuse any of the commercial truckers from liability if they were speeding or otherwise operating their big rigs negligently or recklessly.
Regardless of who caused the crash on I-81 near the town of Buchanan, we wish speedy and full recoveries for both injured men.
