This month a tanker truck carrying 2,500 gallons of diesel fuel overturned on Highway 15 in Loudoun County, Virginia.

The tanker truck was closely following behind two cars when they apparently slammed on their brakes.  In order to avoid hitting the cars, the driver drove into an embankment, and the tanker truck overturned.

No one was hurt in the crash, and no fuel was leaked into the neighboring community.

Causing an accident is terrible, but fleeing the scene is far worse. Unfortunately, hit-and-runs are a common occurrence, as evidenced by the hit-and-run accident that occurred on I-81 north of Martinsburg, West Virginia (WV).

An SUV was hit in the rear by a tractor-trailer and the collision caused the SUV to hit a guardrail and flip over, according to the Herald-Mail.com. Did the tractor-trailer driver stop and help the victims inside the SUV? No.

The tractor-trailer fled the scene and the woman, along with her husband and young daughter were left to fend for themselves. Unfortunately, the make, model, registration and company of the tractor-trailer have yet to be determined.

The woman, who hails from Hagerstown, Maryland (MD), was seriously injured in the accident and she was listed in critical condition at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia (VA).

Hopefully the tractor-trailer driver will be discovered and apprehended. This was a terrible accident made only worse by the truck driver’s complete indifference to the welfare of the victims involved in the wreck.

The driver of a truck determined to be at fault for an accident that sent as many as 24 Carteret County, North Carolina (NC), students to the hospital with minor injuries  has been charged with failing to yield right of way to the bus transporting the children.

The driver, who lives in Beaufort, NC, hit the school bus on November 8, 2011, at the intersection of Professional Park Drive and Troon Way.

Two tanker trucks collided and burst into flames on a freeway near Phoenix, Arizona (AZ) on November 9, 2011, killing one driver. The accident happened when a milk tanker rear-ended a tanker truck carrying about 7,700 gallons of diesel fuel.

The extreme fire caused police in the nearby city of Chandler to order the evacuations of at least two hotels and businesses alongside I-10.

When flammable materials are being transported on the highway, there is always a higher risk that the consequences of a wreck will be tragic. My colleague John Cooper has reported on the investigation into the death of a Norfolk, Virginia (VA), sanitation worker who was crushed while trying to clear a hopper jam in the back of a recycling truck that the City of Norfolk had purchased from the Southeastern Public Service Authority. A safety device on the truck was disabled by rewiring. Both the city and SPSA deny any involvement in the rewiring. A West Virginia (WV) coal truck driver who drove his vehicle into another truck on Cabin Creek Road near Wealthy Acres in Kanawah County on October 20 has admitted to police he was taking the narcotic painkillers Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone from Reckitt Benckiser) and Oxycotin (oxcodone from Perdue Pharma) before starting his shift. WSAZ NewsChannel 3 reported that the driver who caused the head-on collision has been charged with DUI causing injury, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, driving left of center and reckless driving.

As experienced West Virginia trucking accident attorneys, my colleagues and I see a number of trucking accidents caused by alcohol or drug abuse. Impaired driving is the fourth most common cause of wrecks caused by truckers. Also, a study conducted by a Maryland trauma center revealed that approximately 34 percent of drivers involved in crashes admitted tested positive for only drugs, while just 16 percent tested positive for only alcohol.

This accident in West Virginia illustrates the large number of injuries and deaths caused by coal trucks. In December 2010, for instance, we reported that a coal truck driven in a reckless manner claimed the life of a 19-year-old in West Virginia.
